As an electric guitarist, your amplifier is one of the more critical components in your sound chain. In fact, in terms of sound, the amplifier may be even more important than the guitar. The modern steel-string acoustic guitar (also commonly called a folk, western or country guitar) is the descendant of the classical guitar which has been with us since the middle of the 19th century. An early precursor to the classical guitar, called the gittern can be traced back to medieval times. Similar designs later became popular in Italy and Spain. The name “guitar” is derived from the Spanish word “guitarra”. Unlike the classical guitar which is strung with nylon strings, the modern acoustic guitar employs steel strings. The use of steel strings gives the acoustic guitar a brighter and louder sound than a nylon-strung instrument.
